Humboldt has been renown for delivering the best of California genetics for well over 3 decades. In the beginning stages of the region's evolution weather played a major factor in the selection process. Unpredictable patterns of rainfall and high humidity levels left obvious susceptibilities to disease within the plant's performances.
Newly developing hybrids, drawn from strategic landrace selections were utilized to strengthen the plant's resistance to the extreme environmental conditions. This began an adaptation to many different microclimates the region embodies.
The end result was an array of resistant, high yielding, potent strains with a broad range of flavor profiles. These genetics acclimated to some of the most challenging environments in the country. The Sour Diesel was at the top of this list and reigned supreme elusively for many years.
HSO Sour Diesel#2 came from this original lineage. It has been preserved and maintained within the crew for more than 17 years in clone and seed form. The Sour Diesel is comprised of the classic Mexican sativa (16weeks) X "Chemo" a well known powerful Afghani (7weeks). Diesel is well acknowledged for having superior vegetative growth, displaying thinner leaves from the sativa parentage supported by strong and vigorous infrastructure. These traits are a preemptive reminder of the development to come in later stages. Sour D can be quite demanding. An avid consumer of nitrogen, outdoor gardens should consider enriching the soil with a higher concentration of compost.(20-30% of the entire median) Reapplications of nitrogen-based amendments are recommended every 2-3 weeks just prior to the start of the flowering period. These plants can reach heights of 12-16 feet if left to grow freely. When the Diesel's vertical growth is controlled, it fills canopy footprints rather quickly and performs well in sea of green. SCROG methods are ideal and we highly recommend this style. Two layers of trellis is advised as extra support in later stages is very necessary to maximizing production. When entering the flowering cycle one should expect the Diesel to more than double in size. Using products like kelp and alfalfa meal greatly increase hormone activity, slowing vertical growth and tightening up inter-nodal stacking. Heavier feeding schedules should be taken into consideration throughout the course of the cycle. Sour Diesel#2 finishes in the end of October to the beginning of November outdoors. Cylinder shaped steel cages are recommended for internal support, reinforced by a secondary set of trellis allowing terminal sites to be re-adjusted as production increases. This insures that later development can rest easily during the final phases. Indoors one should start to increase the feeding cycle during week 4-7-9, as these are the critical spikes in metabolism. Again, trellising is preferred in most indoor gardens. You can alter light cycles to 11/13, shortening the flower period by 7-10 days but a mild reduction in yield should be expected. The flavor profile is one worth savoring. Powerful citric gassy overtones flood your pallet followed by hints of sharp pepper and spice. Salivary gland activation is a key element in the selection process. If the smell doesn't transfer to the taste than it definitely doesn't make the cut. Our Sour Diesel #2 was selected for just this reason. Highly resonated and known for holding substance once dried. The end product provides a heavy pungency that transfers undeniably to the flavor.
The effects are tied closely to the Sativa leaning parentage, delivering a strong body-high. When smoked or consumed moderately, it can be used for outdoor activity offering functional daytime benefits. With higher consumption, one may experience the couch locking traits it has been known for providing. Great for appetite increase and can be an amazing sleep aid. It is well worth the time spent to complete the cycle.
